Ultem (Polyetherimide)

Ultem™ is a semi-transparent high-performance thermoplastic known for displaying excellent mechanical and dielectric properties, high thermal stability, and flame resistance. Resistant to hot water and steam, some of the more typical applications we see with Ultem are electrical insulators and connectors, diagnostic casings, valve seats and seals, and wear-resistant bushings and bearings.

A high-strength, heat-resistant, chemically-stable polymer.

Advantages of Ultem for Plastic Parts:

Ultem is the poster child for polymer performance amongst broadly desirable traits in polymers: thermal stability, structural integrity, dielectric capabilities, chemical and corrosive resistance, and dimensional stability. It is also flame and radiation resistant. What makes it different from other polymers:

Biocompatability - Ultem demonstrates high resistance to radiation; including gamma rays.

Low flammability - naturally flame resistant due to its high Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), Ultem will not support combustion.

Moisture resistance - near-zero moisture absorption; making it ideal for maintaining dimensional stability in humid settings.

Applications Best Suited for this Material:

Developed by General Electrics plastic division seeking the ‘ultimate in polymer performance’, Ultem is a first choice for the most demanding applications. It is used in the medical diagnostics field where steam autoclaves, ethylene oxide and gamma radiation are the norm. Ultem is a good choice for high temperature aerospace and electrical applications, as well as chemical and petroleum processing.

Parts we make from Ultem:

Our Ultem parts are used as connectors, insulators, or bearings in components or housings for the aerospace, automotive, medical, electronics, and telecommunications industries.
