PCTFE (Polychlorotrifluoroethylene, or KEL-F)

PCTFE, branded as KEL-F, is a thermoplastic fluoropolymer with a unique range of properties that make it suitable for some specialized applications: high tensile strength, thermal stability over a wide temperature range, dimensional stability, and chemical non-reactivity with excellent vapor and moisture barriers. Non-flammable and resistant to most corrosive chemicals, it is an excellent plastic for aerospace seals and gaskets, chemical processing environments, cryogenic valve and seal componentry, and applications requiring chemical resistance and biocompatibility.

A chemical-resistant, low-friction and stable polymer.

Advantages of PCTFE for Plastic Parts:

PCTFE shares three attributes found across most polymers used for precision parts: thermal stability, strong chemical resistance and dimensional stability. It is also a good choice for its electrical insulating properties. What makes it different from other polymers:

Radiation Resistance - PCTFE demonstrates high resistance to radiation; including gamma rays.

Low flammability - naturally flame resistant due to its high Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), PCTFE will not support combustion.

Moisture resistance - near-zero moisture absorption; making it ideal for maintaining dimensional stability in humid settings.

Applications Best Suited for this Material:

Owing to its excellent anti-flammability characteristics, chemical and radiation resistance, and low outgassing properties, PCTFE is often employed in aerospace applications where chemical resistance, a broad operating temperature range and low flammability are required. It’s extremely suitable for
marine environments. It is also used in cryogenic applications, chemical apparatus, fuel-handling systems

Parts we make from KEL-F

The cryogenic resistance properties of PCTFE make it useful for parts such as seals, gaskets, or valves, in the aerospace, electronics, medical, chemical, and cryogenics.
